MANDATORY Certification for Deer Hunters in Ireland

After several years of talks, the National Parks & Wildlife Service in Ireland finally introduced mandatory training and certification for first-time applicants for deer hunting licenses. It goes into effect in the 2021/2022 deer hunting season. The full text of the announcement can be found here.

The reaction to the decision has been positive in most cases, although there are people who are not happy with this development. So far, there is no word about introducing the requirement for previous license holders but it is reasonable to expect that this will eventually happen.

In either case, it is an excellent opportunity to remind you about our two-part video series about the HCAP exam and certification. This is one of the certifications that meets the National Parks & Wildlife Service requirement.
A detailed syllabus was also published to ensure that training and certification are delivered to an appropriate standard.

I Found a DEAD DOLPHIN | Here’s What to Do

After the recent storms, I took a walk along the nearby beach and found a carcass of a dolphin beached by the stormy sea. Sadly in recent years, an unusually high number of common dolphins are being washed ashore in this part of the world. I might devote a separate video or podcast to this issue. In the meantime watch me inspecting the carcass and submitting a report about the stranding.

Episode 51: Fighting Illegal Salmon Netting with Bertie Brosnan

In this episode you will hear a fascinating account about one man who has spent most of his life fighting illegal salmon netting in the rivers and estuaries of the Irish South West. His name is Bertie Brosnan and he has joined me with his son Dan to tell his fascinating story. But be warned, it is not for the fainthearted. You will hear about personal sacrifice, threats, damaged property, court sentences and shots fired.

There is a lot more than we could possibly fit into roughly an hour-long podcast and we only scratched the surface. That’s why we might get back to this tale in the future. Please leave your comments if you would like us to dig deeper.
